How it's worked out

Attendance is classes attended divided by classes held. To reach a required share r after attending A of H, you attend the next x classes in a row:

x = ⌈(r × H − A) ÷ (1 − r)⌉

If you're already above it, you can miss y classes:

y = ⌊(A − r × H) ÷ r⌋

Worth knowing

  • Many colleges count theory, labs and tutorials separately. Work each one out on its own.
  • Medical or duty leave is often added back. Check your college's rule before you count on it.
  • Exactly 75.0% counts as 75%. 74.9% doesn't, so leave yourself a class to spare.

How many classes do I need to attend to get 75% attendance?

If you have attended A of H classes, attend the next x classes in a row, where x is the smallest whole number with (A + x) / (H + x) of at least 0.75. That works out to x = (0.75 × H − A) / 0.25, rounded up. For 30 of 50 classes, that's 30 more in a row.

How many classes can I miss and still stay above 75%?

With A of H attended, you can miss y more classes as long as A / (H + y) stays at 0.75 or more, so y = (A − 0.75 × H) / 0.75, rounded down. For 45 of 50, that's 10.

Does this work for 60%, 80% or 85% attendance?

Yes. Change the required attendance box to whatever your college or course asks for. The same formula applies to any percentage.

Do labs and tutorials count separately?

Many colleges count theory, labs and tutorials separately. If yours does, work each one out on its own with the classes held and attended for that part only.

What is the 75% attendance rule?

Most Indian universities, including those following AICTE and UGC norms, require at least 75% attendance in each subject to sit the end-semester exam. Below that you can be detained or need a condonation, depending on your university's rules.

How do I calculate my attendance percentage?

Divide the classes you attended by the classes held and multiply by 100. 36 of 48 classes is 36 ÷ 48 × 100 = 75%.
